A listing in
these search engines is a necessity for any aspiring webmaster.
The following 30 search engines are not only the largest and most
popular of their kind, but many are listed amongst the top 100 sites
on the entire Web! Systematically following this list should help
you to generate a significant amount of traffic in very little time
(and with very little expense).
AAA Matilda is a popular search engine that is updated hourly and searchable
by geographical location.
Alta Vista
is perhaps the most popular spider-driven search engine
on the 'Net. While Digital's Alta Vista software will theoretically,
over time, index every page on the Net, it is useful to submit your
site to the spider. By submitting your site's index page, Alta Vista
will automatically list all pages connected to it, effectively indexing
your entire site. The employment of META tags will increase the
chances that your site will be hit on a search.
AOL NetFind
is another popular spider-driven page index, powered
by Excite's search software. Submitting your top-level page will
set the spider in motion as it indexes your entire site.
Business Seek
is a large, searchable database of businesses. As
such, only business listings will be considered.
ComFind is reportedly the Internet's 'largest global business directory',
listing only business sites.
CyberSpider
is a well-organised directory and search engine. At
present, Cyberspider is still relatively new to the Web, listing
relatively few sites in its Yahoo!-like layout. One interesting
feature about the CyberSpider site is that it counts the number
of hits that each of its links have generated, displaying them publicly
next to each site's details.
Excite is one of the top five major search engines on the Web. Both
a categorised directory and a keyword-driven search engine, Excite
lists over 1.5 million databases, including reviews of more than
35,000 sites.
Galaxy is one
of the five top directories on the Web. Sites are categorised by
subject.
GoTo.com is "site finder"
which provides users with the fastest, easiest and most user-friendly
way to find the most relevant web sites on any topic. It is both
a search engine and a directory, seen by more than 2 million web
surfers each month.
HotBot is
another popular spider-based search index, and one which is particularly
easy to use. It's also said to be the 'most complete' web index,
listing more than 54 million documents. Simply submit one URL and
your entire site will be indexed within days.
ICN Internet Explorer
is the official search page of the Internet Explorer
browser, and is certain to increase dramatically in popularity.
Sites are arranged into categories, as specified by the webmaster,
and are searchable using a keyword-based search engine.
Infoseek
is one of the top five search engines on the Web,
and one of the oldest, listing over 20 million URLs. Its automated
search-robot that will list your site within minutes of submission.
Note that sites hosted on free servers (such as Geocities and Tripod)
and sites with binary addresses will not be listed.
Jayde Online Directory
is one of the fastest-growing search engines on the
Net. Jayde's 40 categories are easy to navigate, and a keyword search
is also provided. Submission to Jayde's index may take a few weeks
to process.
LinkMonster is a well-organised, colorful Web site search engine and announcement
generator, browsed by millions of surfers each month.
LinkStar
is another popular online business directory. It only
lists businesses and companies, each listing displayed as an 'e-Card',
packed with details about the organisation. Since this is strictly
a business listing, similar to a business card file, a URL does
not have to be included in the submission.
LookSmart
has been set up as both a directory that you may 'Explore'
(containing thousands of categories and sub-categories), and as
a searchable database of approved entries. The search function also
links to Alta Vista's huge listing if it fails to produce the desired
results. It is best if you browse the site prior to submission in
order to locate the appropriate category and sub-category in which
you wnat your site to appear. There is a link to click on in each
category to add a site.
Lycos is
a well-respected and increasingly popular search spider. Lycos also
lists thousands of sites in its categorised Web guide.
Magellan
gives surfers the opportunity to search from the entire
Web, from only the sites reviewed by Magellan, or only a select
group of quality sites. Magellan's submissions are handled through
the Excite database, though I imagine that suggesting your URL from
Magellan's form may increase the chances that your site will receive
a review.
Nerd World Media
has established a popular Web directory and search
engine. The directory arranges sites by subject.
Northern
Light is one of the newer search engines to make
a big mark on the Net. Already, it has indexed over 30 million sites.
Yours could be next.
OneKey is the largest guaranteed error free, kid-safe search engine
on the Net. All sites that wish to be listed at OneKey must have
G-rated content and, preferably, no commercial content. Sites that
contain ads will be marked as such in order to help children discern
between 'real' content and commercial content. OneKey reserves the
right to edit and/or delete your submission if it doesn't suit their
content requirements.
Pronet Goldlink Directory is the Web's first, and still one of its biggest, international
corporate directories. Pronet lists business sites from 175 different
countries and 65 market industries.
Scrub The Web is
an increasingly popular spider-driven search engine that allows
surfers to search the entire Web, or to limit their search to sites
within a particular category. The link submission process is quick
and easy. Soon, Scrub the Web is planning to launch 'Super Scrub',
a robot-search that has apparently already indexed over 80 million
pages.
Snap!
Online is a new, but very popular net guide designed
in a similar fashion to Yahoo!. At this stage, submissions to Snap!
must be made via an email request.
Starting Point
is, indeed, a great place to start when promoting
your site. As well as featuring some of the Web's finest sites in
their "choice sites" sections, Starting Point features a list of
the most recent sites added to their database which, usually, generates
a short, but effective, burst of traffic.
The Net1 is
actually four search engines in one. You may add your URL to either
their 'consumer search', 'professional search', 'business opportunity
search' or their 'adult search'.
WebCrawler
is a spider-driven search index listing millions of
sites. It is also one of the top 10 search-engines on the Net, according
to traffic reports.
WebDirect!
is a business-oriented yellow-pages type search engine/directory.
Upon submission of your business listing, you are permitted to enter
your data into 10 of 2700 content-specific categories.
WhatsNew.com allows
you to list your site by category and location, with listings updated
hourly. The Excite What's New? section seems to be affiliated with
WhatsNew.com.
Yahoo! is not only
the long-standing most popular search utility on the Web, it is
also one of its most popular pages. A listing in Yahoo! can take
a matter of months to process and appear, but it is worth the wait
to appear in the Web's premiere directory. The best way to submit
your URL to Yahoo! is to browse the site's categories until you
find the page where you want your listing to appear. Then click
on the "Add URL" icon and fill in your information. Yahoo! allows
you to add your URL to up to two distinct categories.
The follow list
contains 126 additional search indices to help generate more traffic
for you. Note that some of these sites are content-specific, meaning
that while some sites won't be able to be listed, others may receive
great benefit from a listing on a site specifically targetted towards
their audience demographic.
